New Amendments in Ph.D Regulation

The following amendments are made in the Ph.D. Regulations vide Res. No. 18.13 & 18.14 of
the 18th Research Board meeting held on 29.12.2011,

Anna varsity vacant seats

With 1.8 lakh engineering aspirants submitting applications for the government’s single window counselling, Anna University expects less than 40,000 seats to go vacant this year as the state government had announced several schemes for students who would get admitted through government counselling.

Speaking to this newspaper on Wednesday, secretary of Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA), Prof. V. Rhymend Uthariaraj, said that though 2,28,243 students had bought application forms from Anna University to attend the government’s single window counselling, only 1,80,061 candidates had submitted the forms.

“As students know that they will get all government benefits, including free laptops and first generation learner concessions, if they get admitted through the government’s single window counselling, the number has increased this year.

We have about 1.6 lakh seats in over 525 engineering colleges across the state and expect more seats to be added as and when the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approves new engineering college in the state,” he said. Pointing out that last year 40,000 seats had remained vacant, Prof. Uthariaraj said that he expected lesser seats to remain vacant this year.

Meanwhile several students have already booked seats in private engineering colleges as they are apprehensive about not getting a seat of their choice in a reputed private engineering college.

A college administrator said that there were about 50,000 seats in the management quota in private engineering colleges in the state.

Engineering counselling from July 13

The month-long general counselling for admission tocourses will begin at Anna University on July 13.

After a co-ordination committee meeting held to decide on the schedule of Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2012, Anna University Vice-Chancellor P. Mannar Jawahar told reporters here on Thursday that the counselling under single window system of admission would begin on July 13 and was expected to go on till August 14.

As the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was yet to provide information on new colleges, courses and increase in intake in the existing colleges, the counselling could be extended by three to four days, he said.

Random numbers will be allotted on June 25 and the rank list published on June 30.

Counselling for sports quota will be held on July 5. The first phase of vocational stream counselling will be held between July 7 and 11 and for the differently-abled it will be on July 12.

Anna University expects the number of applicants to be around 1.80 lakh. Till Wednesday night, 1.70 lakh applications were received. With applications expected to arrive through post until Friday, the number could go up by 10,000 to 15,000, he said.

Last year, the number of seats available under government quota was 1.60 lakh and 1.10 lakh students received allotment orders through TNEA. This year all applicants have an opportunity to get a seat, Mr. Jawahar said.

To a question on the status of the merger process of five Anna Universities of Technology with the parent Anna University, T.S. Sridhar, Secretary, Higher Education, said the committee (headed by Sheela Balakrishnan) had finalised the deliberations. “It is in process,” he said when asked if the committee had submitted the report to the government.

Mr. Jawahar said that Anna University had conducted exams for students in colleges affiliated to the AUTs and it would give the degrees when they passed out.

He ruled out any change in the schedule announced as the committee had deliberated at length before finalising the dates.

AWARDING OF UNIVERSITY RANK

A CANDIDATE SHALL BE ELIGIBLE FOR AWARD OF RANKING ONLY IF HE/SHE HAS PASSED THE EXAMINATION IN FIRST CLASS OR FIRST CLASS WITH DISTINCTION IN THE FIRST AVAILABLE CHANCE (i.e.) FIRST ATTEMPT IN ALL THE SUBJECTS. THOSE WHO HAVE AVAILED THE PROVISION OF BREAK OF STUDY/WITHDRAWAL WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR RANKS.
RANKS ARE GIVEN AT THE RATE OF ONE FOR EVERY 20 CANDIDATES PASSED OR PART THERE OF IN EACH BRANCH OF STUDY/SPECIALIZATION, SUBJECT TO A MAXIMUM OF 50. HOWEVER, IF THE NUMBER OF CANDIDATES PASSED IN A PARTICULAR BRANCH IS BELOW 10, NO RANK IS GIVEN.

Control engineering, focuses on the modelling of dynamic systems and the design of controllers using electrical circuits, digital signal processors and microcontrollers

Telecommunications engineering

 
Computer engineering the design and control of computing devices with the application of electrical systems       
Software engineering, The application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software, and the study of these approaches; that is, the application of engineering to software.
Power engineering the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, and the design of devices such as transformers, electric generators, electric motors, high voltage engineering and power electronics.        
Optical engineering the design of instruments and systems that utilize the properties of electromagnetic radiation.

Mechanical engineering

Mechanical engineering comprises the design, analysis and usage of heat and mechanical power for the operation of machines and mechanical systems.
Vehicle engineering  The design, manufacture and operation of the systems and equipment that propel and control vehicles

Applied engineering            The field concerned with the application of management, design, and technical skills for the design and integration of systems, the execution of new product designs, the improvement of manufacturing processes, and the management and direction of physical and/or technical functions of a firm or organization.
